The combination of syncopated drums and bass, dominant 7th chords, pentatonic scales, and a tight horn section is universally irresistible
Interestingly, even though funk music is all about the groove, the chords that do show up are anything but simple.
All manner of jazz chords can be found in funk: 7ths, 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, altered chords, and chromatic movements are all common.
Dominant-type chords are favoured above all else, and of all the dominant-type chords, the chord that most screams funk is the 7#9(no 5th) chord.
Funk progressions in a major key are often based off the blues.
This means that the natural chords of the major scale are forgotten, and dominant-type chords appear everywhere.
Modal chords are also extremely common. This creates a mixture of major and minor tonalities.
